The Story Behind Peterborough Military History Group

Preserving and Promoting Military History

The Peterborough Military History Group began life in the 1960’s as the Soke Military Collectors Society. Over the years we have evolved, but basically remain a group of like-minded individuals who have an interest, some would say passion, for military history.

This passion has manifested itself in many ways to include people who collect military equipment and items of historical interest, people who are interested in scale modelling, and those who do not have a collection but are fascinated with military history and enjoy talking and hearing about it with like minded people, and also listening to talks on military subjects presented each month at our meetings.

Our new name best describes what the Group is about, that is, collectors, modellers and people who just want to learn more about the multitude of military subjects from the earliest times to modern day.

We meet at the Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery in Priestgate, Peterborough, PE1 1LF, on the second Wednesday of every month, 7.30pm to 9.00pm. We also hold an annual exhibition at the Museum on one day a year, when members can bring out their collections and show them to the public. Here, we also have the Bargain Stall, where members bring their spare model kits, books and various items from their collection to help with fundraising. This year the exhibition takes place on Saturday 2nd November 2024.

Each meeting includes a guest speaker, sometimes one of our own members, sometimes an invited guest speaker. We have a refreshment stall where tea, coffee and cakes can be purchased at minimal prices. Some members also bring books in to sell so you never know what you might come away with. We have members of all ages and are always looking to recruit more. A monthly Newsletter is emailed to all members and contributions to this are also welcomed.

We have an annual subscription fee of £8.00 and each month we ask those attending to drop £2.00 into the subs box. Along with proceeds from the refreshment stall and sales from the bargain stall at the exhibition, this is how the Group is funded.
